MANILA, Philippines – Wesley So leads a youthful national team that will be without two of RP chess’ icons. No problem. Team Philippines will play the 38th World Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany “a confident bunch,” chess officials claimed.

The men’s team will be bannered by four of the country’s top 10 players, spearheaded by top-ranked Pinoy player Wesley So.

So will be joined by fellow Grandmasters Darwin Laylo and Jayson Gonzales and International Master John Paul Gomez.

Eugene Torre, Asia’s first GM, and Joey Antonio are forgoing another stint at the top-tier tournament, paving the way for the introduction of new blood.

The most veteran member is GM Bong Villamayor who will man Board One for the Filipinos seeking to improve on their 44th-place finish in the last Olympiad.

“I think we have better chances with our teams this year compared to the ones we had in the Turin Olympiad two years ago,” Prospero Pichay, president of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, said in the weekend.

Only So and Laylo are the remaining members of the 2006 squad.

In the women’s side, Catherine Pereña and her teammates hope to better their 23rd-place finish.

Shercila Cua, Daisy Rivera, Cheradee Chardine Camacho and Christy Lamiel Bernales are the other members of the ladies’ squad. Camacho and Bernales are coming off a grueling junior worlds tournament.

Torre and Cesar Caturla will serve as non-playing captains for this year’s men’s and women’s teams, respectively.

In the Turin Olympiad, Armenia and Ukraine topped the men’s and women’s divisions respectively.

China and the US completed the top three in the men’s side, while Russia and China rounded up the ladies’ top three. – GMANews.TV

It’s going to be the biggest chess olympiad of all ages. After the final closing of the registration list on September the 19th there are more than 2.000 active participants announced at the chess olympiad from November the 12th till November the 25th. The previous appraisal of 1.500 active participants was now outbid.

With 152 registered nations Dresden surpasses the previous Olympiad 2006 in Turin with 7 more countries. The participants distribute themselves to 275 teams, therefrom 156 in the maintournament including the second team of Germany and the teams of the deaf, correspondence chess players and blind persons. 119 women teams are starting.

The chess olympiad is after the Summer Olympics the sporting event with the most participating nations worldwide. With these high numerary the demand is rising too: The International Congress Centre has to admit the players, the arbiters, organizers and official persons, as well as up to 1.500 visitors per diem. Among all nations Russia is the favourite, but almost every world top player is going to attend the Games.

Dresden is also making history in the field of rules. The tournament in autumn comes up with numerous rule changes and is deemed to be the chess olympiad of reformation. Among other changes the player has to sit clocklike on his seat or he is loosing immediately the match. It is not allowed to agree a draw before the 30th move is done.

According to Susan:

The moment you step off the plane, there are signs of the Chess Olympiad everywhere. Right outside of the baggage area is the check in area where players, captains, and coaches can get their badges.
